I am not the only woman to have taken on this role, nor will I be the last, but as woman in this profession, I’m proud to be part of a long tradition of strong women who have shown incredible resilience in the medical field.
But let’s be real—the journey doesn’t just stop at work; it connects with the joys and challenges of motherhood. Finding that balance can feel like a juggling act, and it takes a lot of emotional strength and support from those around us.
Working in medicine is no walk in the park. The unpredictable hours and emotionally draining situations can sometimes clash with our home life, making it tough to find that sweet spot between the two.
I often find myself feeling guilty for missing out on special moments with my little one because of work commitments. The physical and mental fatigue that comes after childbirth is a challenge in itself, and when you add work demands into the mix, it can feel overwhelming. Plus, the restrictive maternity leave policies at my workplace can make things even tougher. It’s a lot to handle, and I know I’m not alone in feeling this way.
Here are a few friendly tips, I suggest, might help lighten the load:
1. Stay flexible: Being adaptable is key to meeting the needs of both your patients and your family.
2. Know your priorities: Think about how much you want to succeed at work versus how much family time you truly crave.
3. Don’t be afraid to ask for help: It’s perfectly alright to reach out to your partner when you need a little extra support.
Being both a doctor and a mother is definitely a challenge, but somehow, we manage to make it work—one shift and one loving hug at a time.
I want to give a big shout-out to all the amazing women out there who are doing their best at work and at home. Your dedication is so important, not just for your families but also for your workplaces.
Let’s remember that a little support and shared responsibility can go a long way in making life a bit easier and brighter for everyone involved. Together, we can create a nurturing environment where women can thrive both at work and home!
